The trials of being a short arse

I'm 4'11 on a good day with a following wind.

I cannot reach things on supermarket shelves or in other peoples kitchens.

I have to drive my car with my nose on the windscreen otherwise my feet don't reach the pedals.

In group photo's I look like I'm sitting down whilst other people are standing, or I look like I'm in a row of my own.

When mini skirts were fashionable mine were always knee length.

My children and grandchildren all tower over me by the time they are 10.

There are some good things about being short.

I've never had to wear flats so as not to tower over my partner.

I'm assertive, I've needed to be otherwise I could be ignored.

Ah yes. My internet identity is Queen Victoria. I'm 67 years old, 4 feet 11 inches, rather stout, have grey hair, am a widow, but I'm easily amused (and more than a wee bit naughty). I have always looked forward to being old, even as a child. Yep, I'm weird.

I suffer from the same complaint, although not quite as short as you. Like you I have had to become more assertive, otherwise people tend to ignore me.

I well remember going to pick my daughter and two grandchildren up from the train station. It was a while since I had seen them, this strange person with short curly hair came towards me with a big grin on his face. He patted me on the head and said, 'hello little Nana'!! I swear he had grown a foot since I last saw him. He towers above me, as do two of my grand daughters.

Yes, as Sheila says, the best things always come in small packages. My Mum was even smaller and people used to barge into her and say, rudely, "Oh, I didn't SEE you!" meaning she was so insignificant she was like a kerb to be tripped over. Or "Oh, aren't you small!" to which she'd reply, with equal disdain, "Oh, and aren't you tall?" I am now much taller, about 5ft 2" and I can't reach shelves, either, even hanging things in the wardrobe is a stretch for me. As for kitchen work surfaces, they're made for giants!

I'm just half an inch taller than you, and although I'm usually fine with that, I do have problems at the supermarket. I don't mind asking for help to get things from the top shelf, but I had a rather disconcerting encounter the other day. I was shopping for frozen foods, and the 'bargain' freezer was almost empty. I approached an employee and asked if he could retrieve some fish from the bottom. 'Certainly Madam' he replied' looking down from his 6ft+, 'Or perhaps Madam would prefer to be lifted in and rummage around for a while'. He must have been all of 20 and I'm 70, but we had a good giggle, and the day was much brighter. By the way when I use the 'good things come in small packages' line, my husband always says, 'Yes, and so does poison'.

I'm 5'2" if I stand up really straight and I am referred to as the family midget as I have 1 sister who is 5'5" and another who is 6'1" - brothers are 6'1" and 6'3" - all my nieces and nephews are tall so I have spent a good part of my life being patted on the head. My school class photos always me seated front & centre with my feet rarely touching the floor.
The one good thing is that when I'm with my sisters people always seem to assume that I'm the youngest (rather than the eldest) which ticks them off no end! :-)

Stew

Y'days lamb was delicious and there is lots left. So today I'm making a stew, I'll use half of the left over lamb and add onion ...
