Where i live.

There are six flats here that are empty and five of them are up for sale. The sixth was the managers flat when there was a live in manager. We have one resident in hospital who will possibly not be able to live independently again and one resident is visiting relatives and also may not return.

The external stairs to the upstairs flats are narrow, some have stair lifts fitted which makes it really difficult for people to walk up and down stairs.

I'm wondering what will happen and if the managing company will decide to cut their losses at some point. There must come a time where this site is no longer economically viable. We residents have already been asked to do some of the small jobs around here if we have the skills. I have no skills so I won't be doing any maintenance. Surely that's the idea of moving somewhere like this, you don't have to worry about the maintenance.

I too have often wondered about warden controlled flats. What happens if it all goes t*ts up with management. There is a complex near where I live possibly 40+ flats and there are a good number up for sale at any time. Maybe I should give them a miss

There’s a retirement village near us which has gone bust and many of the residents own their property. It doesn’t seem a buyer can be found who would take on the management duties and so the residents are in limbo. It has certainly made us think twice about moving to our local retirement housing. That does not sound good at all. Luckily the flats where my Mum had her bungalow (there are four bungalows in the gardens and 13 residential flats and a visitors suite over four floors in the block) seem to be being managed really well. The company has changed hands twice while Mum has owned her bungalow, but the new people always seem to upgrade even more. Which after hearing your story makes me very relieved. My brother is moving into her bungalow in the not too distant future and I would hate for it all to go wrong for him.

Retirement housing is so popular here and places usually fill up quickly. Hope the management can keep the place in good condition so it will attract more people. Maybe management has to invest in it a bit but that would pay off if it fills up.
