Bacon sandwich

Janf, I was 25 so not particularly young, the first ten years were good apart from his mother being difficult. It was his dad dying that made him nasty, if I'd tried to leave he'd have taken the children, not because he wanted them but just out of spite. So I sat it out and left one week after the last child left home.

Steve's not well and has spent the day in bed I've kept him topped up with tea and sandwiches.

He asked for a bacon sandwich I needed to know what sort. Plain bacon between two slices of bread?

A bacon sandwich with an egg in it?

Or a firefighter special, a slice of buttered bread two rashers of well done bacon, in top of that a slice of buttered toast, on top of that a fried egg, then two more rashers of well done bacon and finally another slice of buttered bread.

A boater we met last year insisted that this was a proper bacon sandwich, he was a retired firefighter, hence the name.

Steve just wanted bacon  between two slices of bread.

My mouth's watering, they all sound delicious. Everything's better with bacon. I made a bacon frittata yesterday and it was yummy!

We love the occasional bacon sandwich now we have found places which sell European bacon, most American bacon is very fatty.
It's a real treat for us!
Funny how you enjoy the simple foods from your youth, isn't it?

Well, there's the clearest example of the differences between us northerners and you southerners, what you have described is not a bacon sandwich, it's a bacon butty! A good bacon butty is always made with thick white bread (cheap spongey stuff is perfect), slathered generously with best butter, at least three rashers of back bacon, not healthy medallions, and absolutely never streaky, plenty of brown or tomato sauce (brown is my choice) and served with a cup of strong tea (or coffee, I loathe tea)! If there's a fried egg in it, it must be fried until the yolk solidifies to avoid the 'egg running down chin' problem!
The best bacon and egg butty I've ever eaten was made on a (clean) coal shovel by the driver of a steam train (train not moving), it was absolute perfection!
Husband's best friend/best man/our son's Godfather is a retired firefighter, and his bacon butties are a tower of buttered bread, bacon, fried egg, toast buttered on both sides, fried egg, bacon, bread, the fried eggs are left with soft yolks to spread over the toast.
We have brunch here on Sundays, and today we're having our once a month treat full English, 3 bacon, 3 pork sausages, 3 black pudding, 2 field mushrooms, 2 halved large tomatoes, home made baked beans, 2 fried eggs, served with two crumpets, or three if husband is really hungry!!! No hash browns, no chips, potato products have no place on a breakfast plate!
Is it any wonder I'm on a semi permanent diet, apart from my (amongst our family and friends) legendary full English?
Hope Steve's feeling better today! X

My word the fire fighter bacon sandwich sounds special, what a treat.

It's not a secret.

Y'day while Steve was out with his friend Bob, Betty phoned and asked if I'd like to go and get the cheap vegetables from the nearby...
