I guess you know Betty well enough to say to her "I'd like to go out with you again - but would you mind driving?" Maybe you could offer to pay for the petrol?
It seems she has an idea of how Steve can be, so may understand the difficulties you face.
I like the ideas of asking Betty and suggesting paying for petrol ( gas)... she's knows what's going on and may very wellbe open to the idea!! Good luck!! You need time away!!
