It's not just about the money.

I know 2 couples who are both, like CHS and I on lowish salaries.

Ok not extremely low but living in the expensive Thames Valley, low enough to make things a bit tight finanacially.

One couple have numerous store and credit cards, all maxed out to the limit.
The wife refuses to eat food from anywhere but M&S despite working for another food store and receiving a discount on her purchases.

The other couple, have a Tesco credit card that is paid off in full every month, they shop at Aldi & Lidl.

One couple have borrowed £750 from his parents to help them pay for Christmas, this isn't going to go far as the wife has seen a piece of jewellery she must have for Christmas that costs £500. The husband needs a new pc that costs considerably more.

The other couple have bought and paid for next years holiday as their gift to each other.

Neither couple have children or grandchildren to buy for.

Both couples play the lottery regularly, one couple believe that winning the lottery will solve all their problems.

I beg to differ, no amount of money will solve their problems as they will always spend to the max on  everything.

Hope the first couple aren't you and CHS in disguise! x

Friends of ours went touring up the west coast of the USA seven years ago, completely maxed out their credit cards to pay for it. As they only ever make the minimum payment to their card provider, they're still paying for that holiday now!
We go to New York regularly, and I put the whole shebang on my John Lewis credit card, but it's paid off in full before any interest becomes due. I get JL vouchers for using the card, so it's a win-win for me!
I was brought up to know that you can't spend what you don't have!

I know exactly what you mean, we live as well as we can on our pensions, we are fortunate that we both have small pensions from the civil service and a couple of ones that total under £50 a month. Without those pensions we would have a difficult time. OH gets attendance allowance, that pays for the cleaner we have just started to use and will also pay for a gardener come the spring.

Life was tough whilst we were paying back the money for 2 moves in 6 months, but although I use our credit card it is always paid off each month. There are certain benefits using the CC if anything bought using the CC over £100 proves to be faulty, the CC has to refund the money and they chase the retailer for the money.

Neither couple is us in disguise Winters, though we do have more in common with the 2nd couple.

We are lucky that as we live on a boat it's like a permanent holiday in some ways.

Some people are so thick it's hard to get through.

We have lifelong close friends who are amazed that we firstly own a second home, that I have retired at 60 and hubby has semi retired working 2 days a week. We have had more holidays then them, we have had more cars than they have ever had. Yet they still both have to work. When I've hinted that look after the pennies and the pounds will look after themselves, I've been met with scorn. They have takeaways at least twice a week, she never cooks from scratch. The heating is on full wack and the list goes on.......inrest my case!

Some people have that ‘ I work hard, I deserve it’ mentality. I have no doubt it will catch up with them some day.

I know an accountant who says that he is constantly amazed by how many people are hugely in debt, plead poverty when HMRC ask them to pay their taxes, yet still manage several holidays each year costing thousands of pounds a time because 'they are worth it'. Whoever came up with that damaging phrase should be shot!

Totally agree-the most discontented people I know are always wanting more but grudge you the things you have worked and saved for. We spend our pensions keeping warm, well fed and healthy as we feel it's our responsibility to manage our affairs and not expect anything from anyone. Hope ou have settled to retirement. Catriona
