Every morning in the winter I wake up and cough.
I cough on and off for about an hour to an hour and a half, the colder it is the more I cough.
I've been doing this for at least the last ten years, probably longer.
I wouldn't mind but I have never ever smoked in my life!

Are you on any beta blockers? They're known for making you cough. Or some other medication perhaps?
Asthma? There is a type triggered by quick changes of temperature. (You said it happened more in winter...)
It’s important to have this diagnosed and treated. Asthma can be miserable and progressively damage lung tissue.
Feather pillows?
It could be a mild form of asthma...
I think most of us develop an irritating cough as we get older.
I have never smoked too but when I get a cold it goes straight to my chest and I feel very cross about it, as well as being miffed about the awful cough.
God help me when the corona virus gets me!!!!
Do you take any medication ending in -pril? This type is known to cause irritating coughs but there are alternatives available.
Another cause (as well as those already mentioned) could be the dry air in your cosy cabin, especially if your fire is smouldering away all night. Maybe a small humidifier in the room might make the air less irritating?
I had a problem with ongoing coughs after infections. My GP gave me a ventolin inhaler which I seldom had to use but made it much better. You should talk to your GP about it.
I agree with KTB it could be Asthma as mild asthma can show up like this and a mild steroid inhaler everyday could put a stop to that. You really should mention it to your doctor.
