A year ago today

A year ago today Steve had his stroke, it's been a challenging year.

His recovery has been in fits and starts, family problems, his family not mine, have caused extra stress.

Steve initially was very keen to return to work but this hasn't been possible.

Fortunately he was eligible for six months full pay and six months half pay.

This finishes today but as we have sold our old boat we have some savings behind us.

He  was asked to hand his notice in but refused as it would mean he'd be expected to look for alternative employment.

Therefore he is to be dismissed on the grounds of medical incapacity.

This means he does not have to seek other employment and he should get his NI stamp paid until he reaches pension age.

He will not be entitled to any benefits as we have savings.

Unfortunately the dismissal procedure isn't going well.

The school need two governors to attend the meeting but currently they are having trouble persuading any governors to do so.

The first meeting was cancelled, we are still waiting for another date to be suggested.

Thank you for your comment on my blog yesterday - our situation is nothing like as difficult as yours. You are very much in my thoughts and prayers right now. Hoping things work out promptly, and without too much fuss for you.

Try he benefits system for DLA, it's not means tested.

And if he can get that, Carers Allowance for yourself.

You have to be so careful these days with anything to do with employment. The Social love dismissing cases on a technicality. You sound clued up on things. Hopefully they'll find 2 governors soon and the process will go through.

Thank Cumbrian, I'll look I to DLA, not eligible for carers as I'm retired.

Are you sure that being retired excludes you from carer's allowance?

We have been told it but have an adviser coming out next week so will check. Thank you.

New claims for DLA are now only for children under 16. Steve would need to apply for PIP. Don't be put off claiming some assessments are good some not so. The benefits advisor should be able to help.

You're correct re carers allowance. I was in the last group of women to get their state pension at 60 and carers allowance for my daughter stopped. It's a means tested benefit and your pension status and savings will mean it isn't payable.

Wishing you both the very best outcome and hoping for once the school step up and get things sorted.

Chin up Titus out Hester.

There is Attendance Allowance for him to claim, it isn't means tested. PIP isn't means tested either.

Thank you for all your comments, I'll let you know what the advisor says.

I may be thinking of the wrong benefit but when my dad needed care it was HE that got the allowance to pay for whatever care he decided he needed. Again with my husband just 20 months ago when he died, HE got an allowance, even though I was his carer and was retired. Ours certainly wasn't means tested.

Steve will be entitled to ESA contribution based which as the name suggests is based on his NI record and nothing to do with savings etc

It shouldn't be difficult to claim but sometimes when you ring up they get confused and think you want new style ESA which is based on savings.

He is also eligible for PIP.

If you need help with anything give me a shout as I do this for my job.

Just a thought when he is dismissed he should get notice pay and accumulated holiday pay.

It may be helpful to get in touch with Age Concern as they are brilliant with filling in applications for Carer’s Allowance forms. They do it all the time. Just a thought. Good luck!

Wardrobe

We have a wardrobe in the bedroom that was left by the previous resident. It is perfectly sound but it smells of stinky feet. I've tried...
